Everyone thinks that bras were invented in the early 20th century. But the truth is that women started wearing bra thousands of years ago. The concept of bra goes back to the ancient Indians and Egyptians. Egyptians used to wear a rectangular piece of clothing on their chest. This piece of cloth was sewn with a long tube like dress. Ancient Indians also used to wear bra like clothing called Kanchuka. It was worn by both women and young girls.
Around 2000 BC, the breasts gained great attention and in some cultures people almost worshipped breasts. Women in those ages used to wear a corset style garment which pushed the breasts upward and out of the clothes. In these type of clothing, breasts were fully on display without covering any part of it. In around 400-500 BC, Romans women used to cover their breasts with a tight cloth on the chest. This cloth flattened the appearance of breasts. In the same era, Greek women used to wear a belt like clothing under their breasts to push them upwards to enhance the bust appearance.
In the 14th and 15th century, corset was introduced to cover and give shape to the breasts. The corset was mostly used by elite group of people. Common women were not able to wear corset as it was expensive. It was made on a steel frame, which made it hard for women to walk or move. Evolving from the corset, the trends kept changing slowly and finally the bra was introduced in early 1900s.
In the early ages, women used to wear a piece of leather, whale bone or steel as a bra to cover the breasts. Nowadays bras are made with different materials including cotton, spandex, satin, lace, silk and Lycra. As the time evolved, the fashions and trends in the bras also evolved. There are several types of bras these days having different styles and shapes. These bras are designed to cater the needs of women of all types. The most common bra types include full cup bra, padded bra, plunge bra, push-up bra, strapless bra, sports bra, minimizer bra, nursing bra, demi-cup bra, underwire bra etc.
